How to pop Popping Corn

How popcorn pops

How popcorn pops is actually very simple and all that is needed is heat. As the popcorn is heated moisture inside the kernel turns to steam, creating extreem presure. Once this presure builds to the kernels limits it explodes and turns itself inside out.

There are many ways of getting the heat to the kernel such as a frying pan or pot on the stove, a hot air popcorn popper or probibly the most common way, the microwave. When popping loose popcorn it's recommended not to use the microwave unless you have a microwave popping bag. Here are some instructions to try popping your popcorn on the stove or in an electric frying pan.

Using a Skillet or Electric Frying Pan

What you will need: A pan or pot with a lid, popping corn, oil (coconut or canola oil is best), a bowl for popped popcorn, salt and butter for flavouring.

When choosing the pan or pot to use, keep in mind that popcorn can expand upto 40 times it's original vollume. This means that if you are planning on popping 1 cup of popcorn you will need a 40 cup pot.

Measure out 3 parts popcorn to 1 part oil. Pour the oil into your pan and add 3-4 popcorn kernels. Once the kernels pop pour the remaining popcorn into the pan. Shake the pot while popping to keep the un-popped kernels at the bottom. When popping slows remove from heat and pour into bowl. Season with salt and butter to taste.

Be sure to use a lid while popping as kernels can fly out and burn someone. It is not recommended to use butter for popping as it will burn before the popcorn pops.
